This is what got me started in the Miniature Donkeys: I saw an older Jenny
at someone's farm and immediately fell very much in love with these animals. Miniature
Donkeys always give unconditional love to their owners. Miniature Donkeys love to
be scratched, petted, hugged, brushed.....any kind of attention they can receive from any
of us Humans. Miniature Donkey foals to adults always seem to know if their Human
needs cheering up and work very hard to help lift our spirits. With all the years
I've been raising and breeding Miniature Donkeys I still Love everything about them. If
people would just take time to watch how they all interact with each other they could really
learn a lot from them. Watching how Mothers teach and correct their foals without
saying a word. A little nip on the rump when the foal is nursing...usually means "quit
biting, just eat". A nip on the front leg at the knee to correct being bad. Mothers
steer their foal to where they're going by using her head on either side of the foal's neck
as they're walking. Mom uses her body to turn the foal in a direction or away from
another herd member or something she thinks may be danger. A shake of Mom's head or
a shake of her head and a stomp of her front hoof means something, but I still haven't figured
that one out. Maybe she is scolding or giving some kind of Motherly instructions or
advice. It's really very interesting to me to watch all of these things.
If the Jack is in with the Moms and foals....he may want everyone together, so he'll "bray"
and gather everyone up and head them towards their shelter. Maybe he's just taking
a head count or making sure that they listen to him. He's always the last one of the
long line of Miniature Donkey Moms with their foals. There is usually a foal or two
lagging behind. The Miniature Donkey Jack may boot the foals in the butt with his
nose to hurry them along. If the Jack is a very loving and exceptional temperament
he also plays with the foals and it doesn't matter if they are his or not. (These
are very exceptional Jacks as some Jacks are not good with foals. You have to know
and most important.....trust your Breeding Jack). More on my donkeys later!
